registered non-governmental organization. The Phrase “Milango Ya
Tumaini” is Kiswahili word meaning “Door of Hope” It is a non-profit
making organization. It is based at the Kenyan Coast, Mombasa County. In
2019 a group of dynamic and like-minded persons got together and
establish an organization. Their backgrounds and experiences were anchor
in deferent sectors within the community. This unique combination was
very essential in addressing the most urgent and pressing needs of the
community. True to this spirit the organization was named Milango Ya
Tumaini Organization (MYTO) and was officially registered on 17th
December, 2020. Considering their association with the community, the
group was cognizant of the plethora of problems plaguing the Community.

terms of geography or sector. Whilst anticipating to operate in
different Counties of the Country, MYTO currently has created 110 small

To alleviate poverty, improve access to education, health care services and mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDs among orphans, vulnerable children and the poor in general.
• To promote access to acceptable standard education to orphans, vulnerable children and the community at
large
• To facilitate Financial empowerment to the community
• To improve, expand and promote access to affordable quality healthcare services
• To create awareness and sensitize the community on HIV/Aids programs
• To raise, secure and utilize funds for the attainment of any or all objectives of MYTO
• To do all such other things as are incidental or conducive to the attainment of any of the above objectives.
In the process of social mobilization, MYTO adopts a participatory, self-help, self-sustainable approach
through community involvement and formation of community and volunteer groups in targeted areas.
On big projects MYTO partners with two or more stakeholders to form a consortium to ensure that we deliver
speedily, timely and quality output.
Influenced by the new development paradigm, which puts people before things, MYTO follows a maximum participatory
team approach in every sphere of its work. The Community knowledge and culture is valued and respected, and there
is confidence that the community are capable of self-reliant. On a practical level, the fundamental thrust of this
approach is decentralization and empowerment.
For a community to be able to work for its own development and reduce its dependency there is a need for
full involvement at all stages of the development cycle. The participation of communities in identification,
planning, management, implementation and evaluation of projects is a key factor in MYTO work. Internally a
participatory approach is adopted in managing the affairs of MYTO. This creates a sense of ownership for the
project and programmes MYTO undertake at the community level.
Externally, MYTO role as a “change agent” helps to develop community management structures that are
capable of managing their own development. This increases the ability of the community to demand accountability in
all their affairs, from leaders and officials. It reinforces the community's belief in the value of their own
development choices and efforts. These community management structures are not parallel structures, but are built
upon community institutions, promoting equitable representation and participation.
Human resource development is an essential part of our development work. This means ensuring that the
community is trained and skilled, as well as organized, to maximize the potential of the community to take hold of
its own development.
MYTO strongly believes in maximizing its impact by transferring field experiences into knowledge to
influence the development policies and practices of NGOs, donors and government agencies. This is important for
working towards the long-term goal of eradicating poverty.
